Highway 97 between Summerland and Peachland B.C. was closed due to an approximately 3000 cubic metre rockfall event. Significant tension cracks beyond the source zone were identified after the event. A soil berm was constructed to prevent further movement, along with a lock block retaining wall to ensure material did not fall onto the highway. This resulted in two of the four lanes being temporarily closed while work to unload the slope progressed. Blasting to remove the rock and unload the slope is in progress. A design concept for additional long-term stabilization has been selected. This is to include the installation of a series of rock anchors through the slide as well as construction of retaining walls. Final works are to include the removal of the soil berm currently in place along Highway 97, which will allow for reinstatement to four lanes.
